Optimising liver function

Feeding high performance cows to exploit genetic potential is a major challenge. This should not happen in isolation – keeping these cows happy and healthy is just as important for long term profitability.

From the dry period through to early lactation the cow goes through a huge period of change and her dietary requirements alter dramatically. In early lactation total energy requirement is very high and so the amount of fat in the diet, as a proportion of total dry matter intake, must increase substantially.

Supplies of fat to meet requirements will also come from body reserves. This all means that the cow must cope with increased fat mobilisation, often up to 1kg a day, and at the same time get rid of waste products produced as a result of this increase in metabolism.
