Sel-Plex

Sel-Plex

Sel-Plex® is Alltech's proprietary organic form of selenium yeast manufactured to mimic Mother Nature, thus better absorbed, stored and utilized by the animal than inorganic selenium. Selenium plays an essential role in metabolism, orchestrating normal growth, launching reproductive efforts, neutralizing free radicals and supporting the body’s normal defence mechanism against infection.

Supported by more than 18 years of research, Sel-Plex is the most researched and proven form of organic selenium and is also the only FDA reviewed and first EU approved source of organic selenium. Alltech is currently the world's largest producer of natural, organic selenium yeast.

The benefits of feeding Selplex to ruminants

Selenium plays an essential role in metabolism, orchestrating normal growth, launching reproductive efforts, neutralising free radicals and supporting the body’s normal defence mechanism against infection. Despite the traditional practice of supplementing animal diets with inorganic selenium, selenium deficiencies remain widespread, and ultimately cost producers in terms of overall health and reproductive issues.

The selenium in Sel-Plex is presented in the same form that is naturally present in plants. These forms include selenoamino acids and related compounds ideally suited to digestion and metabolism. This means the selenium in Sel-Plex is more digestible and better retained. This allows the animal to build nutrient reserves against periods of increased demand without risking toxicity.

Using the same system nature has used for millions of years. SelPlex is an effective form of selenium supplementation. This is practically demonstrated with:

  • Normal immune function
  • Reproductive health and productivity
  • Better selenium status in blood, milk and tissues
  • Nutritional status of young calves

Selenium is essential in dairy cows for:

  • Immunity
  • Antioxidant status
  • Postpartum health
  • Nutritional status of calf
  • Udder and uterine health
  • Optimum milk production
  • Normal reproductive function
  • More efficient use of vitamin E
  • Nutritional value of milk and dairy products

Why do ruminants have trouble maintaining optimum selenium status?

Until recently, the industry relied exclusively on inorganic forms of selenium supplementation in ruminants: sodium selenite and selenate. However, ruminant animals have a unique inability to use inorganiac selenium because:

  • Rumen organisms actively reduce selenite, leaving less than 25% available to the animal for absorption
  • Inorganic selenium cannot be stored, leaving the animal without tissue reserves

The result is that ruminants have trouble maintanining optimum blood and tissue levels of selenium

How does Selplex address selenium problems in ruminants?

Selplex offers selenium in its natural form. It contains the same range of selenocompounds present in plants - the forms animals are best to absorb, store and utilise.

Selplex allows the animal to continue to form higher tissue reserves of selenium, in order to meet production demands

Disclaimer

Feeding rates are estimates, and other factors, such as animal health and environment, can have a greater impact on how animals perform. There is no guarantee that animals will perform as expected if fed the suggested rates. Rations should be balanced to provide enough energy and protein for animals, and they should include enough forage to keep the rumen healthy. Animals also need access to fresh water at all times.
