PLANNING FOR THE WINTERTo have a successful winter in terms of milk or beef production you must have a good forage. A little extra care now, could have a tremendous impact on your profit margins next winter. The cheapest product you have to feed on your farm is your own grass or grass silage. Along with maize silage, wholecrop, crimped cereals or caustic treated cereals you have the basics to provide almost half of your total production of milk. In some cases over 5,000 litres per animal per lactation are being produced and the better the quality of forage the more litres you will produce. Once you have conserved this quality forage you have to balance it either with a total TMR system, semi-TMR system or parlour feeding only. The type and quality of the blend or compounds you choose to use will be based on the quality and quantity of forage available. To be efficient and economical it is a known fact that you need to buy quality, preferably from a company that can guarantee you a FIXED FORMULATION, why go to all the trouble and cost of making quality forage to undermine it by balancing it with inferior products. If you buy blends or a compounded ration without a FIXED FORMULATION guarantee, you run the risk of inferior ingredients designed to fit into a 'least cost formulation'. Least cost formulations are only in place to help one person - and that is not you the customer! Before you look at contracting tonnage for next winter (or indeed this summer) ask you supplier if he can guarantee a FIXED FORMULATION. If he can't, then ring 01948 661602 we will be able to fulfil your needs.
