GP Feeds Ltd - Quality Products for Quality Production...

IMPORTANCE OF FORAGE

May has to be one of the busiest months in the farming calendar. Cultivating and sowing maize and taking first cuts of silage are the priority on the majority of farms in the area. Not only a very physically demanding month it is also the month when your future profit margins are determined either by the weather or your own inputs. The establishment of a good seed bed for your maize crop is of paramount importance and will determine the yield and quality of the crop in the autumn. Given reasonable weather, all the basic needs for sowing a successful crop rate are dependant on you and your contractor and that final attention to detail can make the difference between a good and an exceptional crop of maize.

Equally important is the care needed when silaging your first cuts. Traditionally the first cut of grass will account for about half of your total grass silage amount for the winter. Again, attention to detail and good management of your contractor will make or break your profit expectations for the coming winter period. You pay your contractor a lot of money and the cost will be the same whether he does a good or bad job of cutting and ensiling your grass. Height of cut, length of chop, correct application of additive, pit management and correct consolidation will all affect the quality and finally, good sheet coverage will reduce secondary fermentation.
